Waiting for the Kuwaiti PM to accept his resignation

http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/meoicons/headers/captionb.gif

KUWAIT CITY - Kuwait's Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Khaled al-Sabah submitted his resignation Thursday over the death of a detainee allegedly as a result of police torture, said a government official.

"The minister today submitted his resignation to the prime minister who can accept or reject it," the official said, requesting anonymity.

Sheikh Jaber was unreachable for comment related to his reported resignation, but the electronic newsletter Alaan quoted him as saying: "I submitted my resignation in line with my duty and responsibility."

"I am not honoured to lead a ministry that attacks citizens," said the minister, who is a member of the Al-Sabah ruling family.

Islamist opposition MP Faisal al-Muslim welcomed the move, which he said was brave, while urging Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah to accept the resignation.

Independent MP Hussein Mazyed said the resignation was because of the grave implications over the death of Mohammad Ghazzai al-Mutairi, a citizen in his 30s.

An interior ministry-appointed forensic commission found on Thursday that the death of Mutairi at a police station was a suspected criminal act, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also referred the case along with the suspects to the public prosecution service to take any necessary legal action, it said.

Mutairi died on Tuesday on arrival at hospital from a police station with his legs and hands tied and bruises all over his body, opposition MPs said.

The ministry initially said he died after feeling pain in the chest and recalled he resisted police when he was arrested on suspicion of trading in alcohol, which is banned in this conservative Muslim state.

But the ministry statement on Thursday said the interior minister had ordered a new probe into who provided the false information in the first ministry statement.

Kuwaiti MPs decided unanimously on Wednesday after a stormy debate to form a parliamentary panel to investigate the allegations, and gave it two weeks to submit a report.

During the debate, MP Mazyed said Mutairi was tortured mercilessly in the police station and that "they inserted a stick into his rectum."

Several MPs also called on the interior minister to resign.

Wikileaks: Swiss Muslims went on walk, ended up in terrorist database

Wikileaks: Swiss Muslims went on walk, ended up in terrorist database

Truth is, I don't see the big scoop in this story. The Americans are concerned about possible attacks against their diplomatic missions.

Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten (NO) found a surveillance report by the American embassy in Bern, which noted that two Swiss Muslims might have been scouting out the American UN Mission in Geneva in October 2005. The surveillance team noted that the two had a sign in the back of their car with the word 'Islam' on it. The report was entered into the Security Incident Management and Analysis System (SIMAS).

A Swiss Justice Ministry spokesperson says that according to Swiss law the surveillance was illegal.

The two, Nemat Mardam-Bey and Hafid Ouardiri, say they often go for walks in the nearby park. Both have been spokespeople for Islam in Switzerland for years. Ouardiri was a spokesperson for the Geneva Mosque for 30 years. In 2009 he turned to the Human Right Court in Strasbourg after Switzerland passed a law banning minarets. In July 2009 he was a member of a European delegation of imams and rabbis who visited the White House, and met president Obama and his religion adviser Joshua DuBois. He was named an honorary citizen of New York by mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Since 1999 Ouardiri and Mardam-Bey have been running a center aimed at building inter-religious coexistence between Muslims and other religious groups. Mardam-Bey: We are peaceful people who are actually working to build a bridge between Muslims and other faiths.

Ouardiri was shocked when approached by Aftenposten, and is considering taking legal steps against the US. He told Aftenposten that such reports could endanger people and that the real terrorists are those who wrote the report.

Paris: Blast at Tunisian consulate

Paris: Blast at Tunisian consulate

The attack is probably related to the ongoing riots in Tunisia, where 20 people were reportedly killed by the security forces.

Via AFP:

French police said a "small explosion" occurred at the Tunisian consulate in a Paris suburb early Sunday, which the country's ambassador denounced as a "terrorist act".

The blast took place around 5:00 am (0400 GMT) at Tunisia's office in Pantin and "caused minor damage to the consulate's metal shutters," said police, who have opened an investigation.

It could have been a petrol bomb that caused the explosion, local officials said.

Tunisia's ambassador to France, Raouf Najar, said in a statement sent to AFP: "The disinformation these past few days on what is happening in Tunisia is such that anything is possible, even this terrorist act."

Iranian authorities claim Ms Bahrami had 450 grams of cocaine in her possession at the time of her arrest, in addition to 400 grams of opium.

The drugs charges against Ms Bahrami came on top of charges of membership in an armed opposition group, for which she could also face the death penalty. That portion of her trial must still take place.

Cyprus: Muslims want mosque area back

Cyprus: Muslims want mosque area back

(Hala Sultan Tekke)

Via World Bulletin:

Muslims in Greek Cypriot side established "Cypriot Supreme Council of Muslims", demanding the property around the Hala Sultan Tekke, which angers the Greek archbishop.

The 20-member association takes back the property around Hala Sultan Tekke in Larnaca, which Greeks reportedly plan to build an entertainment center.

According to Turkey's Anadolu news agency, citing "Greek Simerini newspaper", "the association's emblem carries "flags of the Ottoman Empire, the Ottoman navy flag and a ship with Ottoman robe (kaftan)."

President of the Association, Imam Sakip talked to Sigma TV and expressed uneasiness with the desicion that the Greek Cypriot administration allowed an entertainment center to be built 20 meters from Hala Sultan Tekke. He has accused the Greek Cypriot side of not showing respect for the Muslim places of worship.

Imam Sakip said, "I would like to give this message to the Republic of Cyprus (Greek part) that you need to be an example of a European country," he said. In order to show this, Republic of Cyprus should hand over the keys of Hala Sultan Tekke and the property around it to the association," he said.

FORMATION OF THE MUS-HAF

FORMATION OF THE MUS-HAF

Hadrat [1] Jabrail used to come once every year to recite the Qur’an that had descended up to that moment according to its order in the Lawh-ul-mahfuz. And our master, the Prophet, used to listen to it and repeat it. In the year when he (the Prophet) would honour the Hereafter, Jabrail came twice, reciting the whole of it. Hadrat Muhammad and the majority of his Ashab [2] memorized the whole Qur’an. Some of the Ashab memorized some sections of it and wrote down most of its other sections. In the year when Hadrat Muhammad ‘alaihis-salam’ honoured the next world with his presence, Abu Bakr, the caliph, gathering those who knew it by heart and, uniting the written parts together, formed a committee to write down the whole of the Qur’an on paper.

Thus, a book (a manuscript) called a Mus-haf was formed. Thirty-three thousand Ashab of the Prophet decided unanimously that each letter of the mushaf was precisely in its correct place. The suras (chapters) were not separated. Hadrat Uthman, the third caliph, separated the suras from one another in 25 A. H. He put them in their order. After having six more mushafs written, he sent them to Bahrain, Damascus, Egypt, Baghdad, Kufa, Yemen, Mecca and Medina. The mushafs all over the world today have been multiplied by copying these seven. There is not even a point’s difference amongst them.

There are one hundred and fourteen suras
[3] and six thousand two hundred and thirty-six ayats [4] in Qur’an-al karim. It is also reported that the number of ayats were sometimes more or less than 6,236, but these differences originate from the fact that one long ayat was considered several short ayats, or that a couple of short ayats were considered one long ayat, or that the Basmalas before the suras were considered to be within the suras (by some scholars) and to be independent ayats (by others).

GLOSSARY

[1] Hadrat: title of respect used before the names of great people like and Islamic scholars.
[2] As’hab-i kiram: (as-Sahabat al-kiram); the Companions of Rasulullah.
[3] sura(t): a Qur’anic chapter [a chapter of the Qur’an].
[4] ayat: a verse of al-Qur’an al-kerim; al-ayat al-karima.

Sovereignty Belongs to Allah

Sovereignty Belongs to Allah

People of wisdom state:

Sovereignty belongs to Allah. Everything including every partical of dust belongs to Him. Not only hands and arms but also every cell needs Allahu ta'ala every moment. Interestingly enough, even the structure of a simple cell has not been able to be brought to light clearly by modern science. Scientists are analyzing every being and making an effort to learn its constitution, thus striving to trace the origin of life. However, they are looking for it in nature. They claim that it originated from such and such a molecule or from such and such a chemical compound. That is, they are dwelling on only its apparent causes, but they do not and cannot confess in any way that it is Allah who creates everything and who keeps it in existence.

Once upon a time, a youngster asked a holy man, "Does Allah exist?" In reply to it, the holy man asked the youngster, "Do you exist?" He said, "Of course, I do." Thereupon, that man stated:

"If you do exist, then Allah exists, too. Show me something in this room that was not made by a human. For example, was this lamp or this glass made by a human, or did it come into existence incidentally by itself?"

"Surely, each of them has a maker," he answered.

"Well then, do you not have value as much as a glass does? While there is a maker of even a glass, is it possible that such a perfect being and such a perfect body as you came into existence by itself? There is certainly Allah Most High, who created you," he explained.

"Okay, how is Allah, sir?" he wanted to learn.

Upon this, that holy man related the following story to the youngster:

While a man was passing by a place, he saw a shepherd. He thought to himself, "I will go near him and enjoin the doing of what is good. I will teach him the Islamic religion." He asked the shepherd, "Does Allah exist?"

The shepherd replied, "Make repentance for asking so, sir! You seem like a wise, scholarly man. How can you ask such a question? Since you asked it, I say that of course Allah exists."

"Well, how do you know the existence of Allah?" he asked again.

"As you see, there is a flock of sheep here. If there were no shepherd watching over them, there would not be this flock; it would disperse. Wolves might devour them, or someone might take them away. There would be no such thing as a flock of sheep. Look at the universe! There is the moon, the sun, stars, mountains, trees, humans, and animals. They did not come into existence by themselves. No doubt there is a Being who creates and governs them all. How can this stupendous universe come into existence by itself? The governor of all of them is Allah," he clarified.

"Okay, how is Allah then?" he asked.

"Go and ask a sheep how the shepherd is. If the sheep can describe me, I will describe Allah too," he answered.

"But the sheep cannot know anything about you," he uttered.

"Just as the sheep cannot know how the shepherd is, so a shepherd cannot know how Allah is. I am always with the sheep day and night. They see me and I see them. If even they are unable to describe me, how can I describe Allah the Most High?" he answered.

After listening to this story, the youngster understood the matter.

Wikileaks: Norwegian terrorists planned attack during 2008 Olympics, Bush possible target

Via Aftenposten (cable sent 08/08/2008):

According to intelligence reporting, two Norway-based East Turkestan Islamic Party (ETIP) associates on 08/07/2008 held a telephonic discussion about a possible threat to the Olympic Games. In the course of the conversation, reference was made to the number "8", the travel of an unidentified person to Beijing on 08/08/2008, and speculation about whether "it" would explode.

Via Aftenposten (cable sent 21/08/2008):

The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) in mid-August told U.S. officials of its findings regarding four telephone numbers possibly associated with a plot to conduct an attack against the President of the United States during the Olympic Games (ref. a). Two of the numbers reportedly were no longer working, one was connected to an associate of a World Uighur Congress (WUC) member, and one was associated with the former wife of a Norway-based East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM)
member. In response to a U.S. request for more information about the travel of an ETIM member between Dubai, Hong Kong, and Beijing, the MSS claimed its investigation did not reveal the individual had entered or exited China, but noted it was continuing to investigate. The U.S. President departed Beijing on 08/11/2008 without incident.

Allah Knows What's Best For Us.

Allah Knows What’s Best For Us.

Allah Knows What’s Best For Us.

Allah knows what’s best for us,
So why should we complain …
We always want the sunshine,
But he knows there must be rain.

We love the sound of laughter
And the merriment of cheer;
But our hearts would lose their tenderness
If we never shed a tear.

Allah tests us often
With suffering and with sorrow,
He tests us, not to punish us,
But to help us meet tomorrow.

For growing trees are strengthened
When they withstand the storm,
And the sharp cut of the chisel
Gives the marble grace and form.

Allah never hurts us needlessly,
And he never wastes our pain;
For every loss He sends to us
Is followed by rich gain.

And when we count the blessings
That Allah has so freely sent,
We will find no cause for murmuring
And no time to lament.

For Allah loves His servants,
And to Him all things are plain,
So he never sends us pleasure
When the soul’s deep need is pain.

So whenever we are troubled,
And when everything goes wrong,
It is just Allah working in us
To make our spirits strong.

Abu Sufyan And Hercules.

Abu Sufyan And Hercules.

Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, narrated that Hercules sent for Abu Sufyan and his companions, who happened to be trading in Jerusalem. That was during the time of the truce that had been concluded between the polytheists of Quraysh and the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Hercules, seated amongst his chiefs of staff, asked, “Who amongst you is the nearest relative to the man who claims to be a Prophet (SAW)?” Abu Sufyan replied: “I am the nearest relative to him from amongst the group.” So they made me sit in front of him and made my companions sit behind me. Then he called upon his translator and said to him. “Tell them (i.e. Abu Sufyan’s companions) that I am going to ask him (i.e. Abu Sufyan) regarding that man who claims to be a Prophet. So if he tells a lie, they should contradict him (instantly)’.

Abu Sufyan, an ardent enemy of the Prophet (SAW) commented: “By Allah, had I not been afraid that my companions would consider me a liar, I would have told lies.”

Abu Sufyan’s testimony went as follows: “Muhammed descends from a noble family. No one of his family happened to assume kingship. His followers are those deemed to be among the weak, with their numbers ever growing. He neither tells lies nor betrays others. We fight him and he fights us but with alternate victories. He bids people to worship Allah Alone with no polytheism and to abandon our fathers’ beliefs. He orders us to observe prayer, honesty, abstinence and maintain strong family ties.”

Hercules, on hearing this testimony, turned to his translator bidding him to communicate to us his following impression which reveals full conviction in the truthfulness of Muhammad’s Prophet hood: “I fully realize that Prophets come from noble families; he does not affect any previous example of Prophet hood. Since none of his ancestors was a monarch, we cannot then allege that he is a man trying to reclaim his father’s monarchy. So long as he does not tell lies to people, he is immune to telling lies as regards Allah. Concerning his followers being those deemed weak with numbers ever growing, it is something that goes in agreement with questions of faith until it later assumes full dimensions geographically and demographically. I have understood that no instance of apostasy has as yet appear among his followers and this point to the bliss of faith that finds its abode in the human heart. Betrayal, as I see, is alien to him because a real Prophet hold betrayal in abhorrence. Bidding worship of Allah with no associates, observance of prayer, honesty and abstinence and prohibition of paganism are traits bound to subject to him all my possessions. I have already known that a Prophet must arise but it has never occurred to me that he will be an Arab from among you. If I was sure I would be faithful to him, I might hope to meet him, and if I were with him, I would wash his feet.”

Hercules then requested that the Prophet’s (SAW) letter be read. The observation of the emperor and finally the definite and clear-cut exposition of the Islamic message could not but create a tense atmosphere amongst the clergy present at the court. Abu Sufyan and his companions were ordered to go out.

Abu Sufyan said, “While coming out, I said to my companions, “The matter of Ibn Abi Kabshah (meaning Muhammed – has become so prominent that even the king of Banu Al-Asfar (i.e. the Romans) is afraid of him.’ So I continued to believe that Allah’s Messenger would be victorious, until Allah made me embrace Islam.”  The king did not embrace Islam – for it was differently ordained. However, the Muslim envoy was sent back to Medina with the felicitations of the emperor.

Sweden: Muslim Council head condemns extremism

Via the Local:

Helena Benaouda, chair woman of the Muslim Council of Sweden (Sveriges muslimska råd), said in a statement that all forms of extremism are unacceptable, and that she, "just like everyone else, must take the threat of extremism - including Islamic extremism - seriously."

Helena Benaouda's daughter has a child together with Munir Awad, the 29-year-old Swede arrested in Copenhagen on Wednesday on suspicions of plotting an attack on the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.

She wrote that she believes in an open society, with equal human rights for all:
"Violent criminal activity and terrorism are attacks on such a society, and against everything I believe in, including my religious beliefs, Islam."

"We must let the police investigation show who is guilty to what, and the guilty will get their punishment. My daughter and her children are safe with me and doing well - and that is what's most important for me," concluded Benaouda in her statement.
