The Prophet's pilgrimage

The Prophet's pilgrimage
Adil Salahi, Arab News

All pilgrims endure some hard times because of the huge numbers doing the same tasks over a very short period of time. Hence, people of thought entertain some ideas on ways to simplify the pilgrimage with easier ways for people to do their tasks and rituals, such as the tawaf, the stoning at the Jamrahs, etc. (S. Abd Al-Rahim)

When the Prophet did certain things that are directly related to religion and worship, or refrained from doing certain practices making clear that they are incompatible with Islam, his guidance must be followed. One example that makes this absolutely clear is his statement: "Pray as you have seen me offering my prayers." We know for certain how he prayed, offering the five daily prayers during the time range allowed for each, and performing every raka'ah with two prostrations before standing up again for a new raka'ah. Therefore, it is not possible for anyone to question the manner of Islamic prayer. No argument can be entertained to modify the way we pray. If we allow an open door for such arguments, the very way of prayers may be totally changed over the passage of time. Someone may suggest that the Prophet did the prostration on the floor because people at the time always sat on rugs, or cushions placed on the floor.

Therefore, it was necessary to put one's forehead on the floor to indicate our humility before God. Today when we use chairs and comfortable seating, we can equally indicate that with a bow, without the need to go down placing our knees on the floor. Such an argument is totally inadmissible. We follow the Prophet's guidance, because God wants us to worship Him in the way shown to us by the Prophet.

The pilgrimage is an act of worship that essentially reflects submission to God and the discarding of everything that discriminates between people on any basis whatsoever. They stand on equal footing before God, dedicating their worship to Him, seeking nothing but His acceptance and making clear that their highest prize is to earn His pleasure. Every act in pilgrimage promotes this notion; every phrase we say emphasizes submission and dedication to Him alone. Hence, it was necessary for the Prophet to show us the way to offer the pilgrimage, fulfilling its requirements that have been outlined in the Qur'an. He showed us every part of the pilgrimage, indicating the way it should be done, its time range and its order within the list of duties and recommended actions of pilgrimage. Right at the beginning he said to all those traveling with him, numbering around 100,000: "Learn from me your rituals". He did not only demonstrate how each act of worship during the pilgrimage should be done; he also corrected any misconceptions or wrong timings. Furthermore, he approved any variation that is permissible in the conduct of the pilgrimage duties. Thus, when one of his companions wanted to offer Maghreb prayer at Arafat, after the sun had set, the Prophet told him: "This prayer is to be prayed further ahead". He indicated in this statement that although Maghreb was due, as far as its time was concerned, it must not be offered at Arafat, but somewhere else on the journey back.

There is no doubt that most pilgrims find the pilgrimage hard to conduct. They suffer due to the great numbers of pilgrims moving around in confined areas. Hence, people are always asking: "Could certain difficulties be removed, or eased out, or modified?" Three points have to be borne in mind when trying to answer this question. They may sound to bear an element of contradiction, but in fact they are consistent. These are: 1) the pilgrimage is meant to be demanding so that only a person who is eager to do it will undertake the journey; 2) an essential element of the nature of this act of worship is to make things easier; 3) all parts of the pilgrimage have to be done at the times and in the manner shown by the Prophet. When we discuss the points raised by readers, all three points will appear to work in the same direction.

S.P. Scott: Muhammad was indeed an Apostle of God

S. P. Scott writes in, History of the Moorish Empire in Europe, p. 126:

If the object of religion be the inculcation of morals, the diminution of evil, the promotion of human happiness, the expansion of the human intellect, if the performance of good works will avail in the great day when mankind shall be summoned to its final reckoning, it is neither irreverent nor unreasonable to admit that Muhammad was indeed an Apostle of God.

Latvia: Halal slaughter legalized

Latvia: Halal slaughter legalized

Latvia: Halal slaughter legalized

Sweden gets its halal chicken from Denmark, now a Latvian company intends to sell Sweden halal beef.

The Latvian parliament recently enacted controversial legislation in the animal welfare law, which legalizes halal and kosher slaughter. The meat will be exported to Sweden.

With a narrow majority the Latvian parliament, the Saeima, decided to implement an adaptation of the Animal Welfare law, which makes it legal to ritually slaughter animals. This method means that the animal isn't stunned before its throat is cut and the animal bleeds to death.

About 300 people protested outside the Saeima with the Animal SOS organization, which thinks the method is inhumane. In Sweden the method is not allowed, but Vents Armands Krauklis of the conservative Latvian People's Party think that exporting the meat to Sweden can help Latvia's crisis-hit finances.

"This is necessary when there's an economic crisis," said Kraulik, who had trouble making himself heard during a break, surrounded by the demonstrators.

Krauklis is the one who pushed hardest for the legislation, which was enacted after only two meetings. In the past this has only occurred when a quick decision was absolutely essential.

Several demonstrators thought it was peculiar that the legislation was called for by a private company and not by Muslim or Jewish groups. The CEO of the company is a party member of Krauklis, and demonstrators accused the member of corruption.

"We think he's just using the crisis as an excuse," said a demonstrator.

The organizers Animals SOS, emphasized that their protest didn't have racist motives, but only animal rights. Despite this, there was a poster among the demonstrators of Latvia squeezed between a Star of David and an Islamic crescent.

"That man is not with us. We tried to get him to go but he refuses. We are against cruelty to animals, not religion," said Laura Karnite of Animals SOS to Swedish newspaper Arbetaren.

Is the mother of the father’s wife a mahram to his sons?

Is the mother of the father's wife regarded as a mahram to the husband's sons?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The father's wife is a mahram to his sons and his sons' sons, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And marry not women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed; indeed it was shameful and most hateful, and an evil way" [al-Nisa' 4:22].

With regard to the mother of the father's wife, she is not a mahram to his sons, because there is nothing to indicate that this is the case. Allaah, may He be exalted, says after mentioning the women who are mahrams (interpretation of the meaning): "All others are lawful…" [al-Nisa' 4:24].

The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked: My father has taken another wife besides my mother. Is the mother of this wife a mahram to my father's sons from his other wife, or is she a non-mahram and is it haraam for them to meet her, sit with her and be alone with her?

They replied: The mother of the father's wife is regarded as a stranger (non-mahram) to his sons from another wife and his sons are not mahrams to the mother of the father's wife. So she must observe hijab and it is not permissible for them to be alone with her or for her to travel with them, because they are not mahrams for her. End quote.

ISRAEL, PALESTINIANS MUST REFRAIN FROM INCREASING TENSIONS – TOP UN OFFICIAL

ISRAEL, PALESTINIANS MUST REFRAIN FROM INCREASING TENSIONS – TOP UN OFFICIAL

Worrying developments on the ground have increased tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the past month and it is vital that both sides refrain from provocative actions, the top United Nations political official said today.

"While the immediate crisis may have passed, we remain concerned about the broader situation in East Jerusalem and the potential for renewed tensions," Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe told the Security Council, referring to incidents around the Haram al Sharif/Temple Mount site, sacred to both Jews and Muslims.

"Even with the full determination and support of the international community to achieve a two-State solution, the essential ingredient is political will from the parties to meet their obligations and negotiate an end to the conflict," he said in the regular monthly report on the conflict to the 15-member body.

Mr. Pascoe cited clashes in Jerusalem between Israeli police and Muslim worshippers at al-Aqsa mosque and subsequent confrontations, with the Islamic Movement of northern Israel claiming radical Jewish groups intended to alter the status quo of the holy site. "The Israeli authorities strongly deny these rumours," he said. "Bitter accusations from both sides, however, underline the gulf of mistrust that exists."

He stressed that the issue of the Old City of Jerusalem will only be fully resolved in final-status negotiations as part of the Roadmap peace plan championed by the so-called Quartet – the UN, European Union, Russia and the United States – that calls for two States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security.

"Until then, the repeated call of the Quartet on Israel to refrain from provocative actions in East Jerusalem and on the Palestinian Authority to refrain from incitement remains more relevant than ever," he stressed, also citing continuing Israeli "illegal" settlement activity in Palestinian areas.

Referring to a recent report of a UN mission that found evidence that both sides in the three-week war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in December and January committed serious war crimes and breaches of humanitarian law, Mr. Pascoe reiterated Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call that all parties carry out a credible investigation into the conduct of the conflict without delay.

"The Secretary-General believes that international humanitarian law needs to be fully respected and civilians must be protected in all situations and circumstances," he said, also noting a "worrying increase in violence" in the area, with 12 missiles fired from Gaza into Israel during the last month, and nine Israel incursions and 12 air strikes. "It is essential that calm not only be restored, but solidified," he warned.

Despite extensive discussions, Israel has not yet approved the UN's Gaza recovery proposals for schools, clinics and housing destroyed or damaged in the fighting, and is still blocking exports out of the area, while food and hygiene items continue to make up the bulk of the imports it allows in.

"The pattern of events over the last month in the Middle East is a powerful reminder that without a credible political horizon – including commitments made, monitored and kept on the ground, and a calling to account when obligations are breached – forces of violence, tension and extremism on both sides will fill the vacuum," he concluded.

"Now, more than ever, it is vital that politics is made credible, and those who try to undermine politics by changing facts on the ground or resorting to violence are not allowed to set the agenda."

More than 40 countries are scheduled to speak in the Council's ensuing open session.

In his latest <"http://documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/N09/515/08/pdf/N0951508.pdf?OpenElement">report
to the Council and General Assembly on the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine, which was released yesterday, Mr. Ban called on the parties to honour all existing agreements and pursue an irreversible effort towards the two-State solution.

Sex Education and Teenage

Sex Education and Teenage

The teenage pregnancies and the sheer madness of sex education teaches nothing about morality. A fifteen years girl has a child from a thirteen year old boy. They and their parent are very proud of thie child anf grand child. Now two more boys claimed that they are the fathers of the child. DNA test will prove the child's paternity. This means that the girl had multiple sexual relations. Britain's rate of teenage pregnancy is the highest in western Europe. This is a clear indication of broken society. It is an eye opening for the Muslim community who send their children to state schools with non_muslim teachers.

Sex education and contraception in schools make children as quasi adults, capable of making their own life choices. Children are being taught that sexually transmitted diseases could be easily treated and there is no acknowledgement of the emotional harm of premature sexual activity. The truth is that more sex education and contraception are provided to children and teenagers, the more they fall pregant. Studies have shown that access to contraceptions and sex education, sexual activity and conception and prgnancy rates go up.

The teaching of sex education could not curb teenage pregnancies. Infact, it has simply increased it. The spectre of hidden epidemic of sex crimes inside Britain's classrooms has emerged after Scotland Yard revealed there have been nearly 900 rapes or sex attacks in schools. The vast majority of victims were school children under the age of 16. As many as one in three were under 11.

According to official figures, nearly half of babies are now born out of wedlock. They are more likely to suffer social.mental and emotional problems. Researchers have revealed the migrants in Britain are more likely to have children within marriage. If Muslim children keep on attending state schools with non-Muslim monolingualk teachers than there is a possibility that teenage Muslim girls will have children out of wedlock.

The sexualisation of children by the government, Dept of Education, 'pregnancy advice centres', social workers, school nurses, media aimed at teen girls, contraceptive industry lobbyists, fashion industry and the welfare state to name just a few, is a crime against humanity.

It is also gross hypocrisy for the police to prosecute paedophiles when the government is overseeing boy scouts being given condoms from the age 11 and girls of the same age being told it is OK to have sex if they use 'protection'. Boys and girls at age 11 are not allowed to marry but they can have sex and produce children. Every parent is worried about his child being indoctrinated into the idea that gay and sexual promiscuity is "normal" modes of behaviour. At the same time, all parents have the right to control their children and it is their Duty to control them.

It is an eye opening for the Muslim parents who keep on sending their children to state schools with non-Muslim monolingual teachers. Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers a s role models during their developmental periods. Muslim teachers are in a better position to teach sex education to teenagers according to Islamic perspectives. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school. State funded Muslim schools are crucial for social cohesion, religious and cultural harmony. They are preparing children and young people to face the challenges of life in modern Britain and to also contribute in a positive way to wider society. Muslim children will develop self-confidence and self-esteem. According to TES, pupils make more progress at Muslim secondary schools than anyother type of schools. They are promoting tolerance and support the spiritual, moral, social, linguistic and cultural development of pupils.

Prayers at home or in the mosque

Prayers at home or in the mosque

Adil Salahi | Arab News

Some people prefer to perform all their prayers at home, going to the mosque only once a week, for Friday prayers. Others do the opposite, and attend prayers at mosques for all five daily prayers, leaving nothing to perform at home. There is no doubt that offering the obligatory prayers with the congregation in the mosque is much better and brings the worshipper much higher reward. In fact, praying with a congregation is given 27 times the reward for a prayer offered alone.

Yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) is quoted to have said several Hadiths encouraging us to allocate some of our prayers for home. Ibn Umar quotes him as saying: "Offer some of your prayers in your homes so as not to make these homes like graves." (Related by Al-Bukhari).

Islam considers the whole earth a place of worship. Prayers can be offered anywhere, apart from certain areas such as rubbish dumps, bathrooms or graveyards. Thus, wherever one happens to be at the time an obligatory prayer is due, one can offer prayers there. Islam does not like the idea that prayers should be offered only in a place dedicated for worship, such as a mosque or a temple. Prayers are part of a Muslim's regular activities and can be offered anywhere.

At the same time, offering prayers in a congregation is strongly encouraged because it strengthens ties within the local community and brings people together. Worshippers exchange friendly conversation after prayers in a relaxed atmosphere. They inquire after those who miss a couple of prayers. Hence, Islam gives greater reward to congregational prayers.

At the same time, some people cannot attend prayers in mosques, particularly women who need to look after young children and people who are sick or attend to duties that must be completed without interruption. These people can offer their prayers at home or place of work.

In the Hadith we have quoted, and in several others, the Prophet encourages offering some prayers at home. Taken together these Hadiths appear to encourage that we offer the recommended and voluntary prayers at home, leaving the obligatory ones to offer in the mosque with the congregation. Thus we establish a proper arrangement, providing a good example for our women and children to encourage them to attend to their prayers regularly. At the same time we also attend mosques, participating with the local community, and gaining greater reward. We also fulfill a very important duty, the congregational prayer, which is an essential element of Islamic worship.

We note that the Prophet describes a home in which prayers are not offered to be like a grave. The similarity is in various aspects. Dead people have no duties of worship to perform. Therefore, a home in which no act of worship is offered is like a grave. On the other hand, a person who glorifies God and mentions His name is always alert to his duties. One who does not do that is like a dead person because he is oblivious of the meanings that come to mind when we glorify God and praise Him.

Hence, we combine all the good aspects of offering prayers and reaping the fruits of proper worship when we attend the mosque and offer our obligatory prayers with the congregation, leaving the regular recommended prayers and the voluntary ones to offer at home

Hospital mix-up shatters Makkah woman’s life

Hospital mix-up shatters Makkah woman's life
Badea Abu Al-Naja | Arab News

MAKKAH: A DNA test on a 34-year-old Saudi woman recently proved that she is not biologically related to the parents who raised her. The mistake was traced back to a hospital that at the time of the woman's birth would place newborn babies in the same communal bed in the maternity ward.

"I was brought up among brothers and sisters whom I loved dearly but to whom I do not have any blood relationship," said the woman in tears.

The woman, who agreed to speak to Arab News on condition of anonymity, said that the woman who raised her — who passed away 11 years ago — treated her well and made her feel especially loved because she had darker skin than her siblings. "My brothers and sisters got married and left the house," she said. "I lived alone with my mother and father and I was doted over. After my mother died my father engulfed me with his love." But then the stability and care was shattered when another woman approached a court in Makkah saying that she was the biological daughter of the man. A DNA test was ordered and the woman's complaint proved true.

"My sisters and brothers and I were called to do the same test that proved they were related to him, but I wasn't. The claimant turned out to be his real daughter," she said. The biological mother also came forward in the investigation to say that the two women were born on the same day in 1975 at Makkah's Jaroul Hospital. The mother told the judge that a nurse in the maternity ward picked up the wrong newborn from a communal bed. The biological mother said the child grew up with much lighter skin than her siblings.

As she grew up she became convinced she was not related to the family that raised her. One day at a wedding, she met a girl who told her she looked a lot like members of a family that had one dark-skinned girl. She eventually tracked down the family and then went to the court to challenge her paternity.

"Since then my life has been shattered," said the dark-skinned woman. "I still love the man who raised me, and he loves me dearly. I cannot leave him after all these years and go back to my original family."

To add to the grief: her biological father passed away years ago and her surviving biological family struggles to make ends meet.

"They are very poor and I am not employed though I am a college graduate," she said. "I will not be in a position to help them. I cannot leave the man who raised me

Israeli's bid to buy Al-Jazeera from Qatar

Israeli's bid to buy Al-Jazeera from Qatar

Haim Saban
An Israeli media tycoon has offered to buy the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera satellite television network from the government of Qatar.

Haim Saban, has submitted an offer to the Qatari government in a bid to purchase half of the Doha -based Al-Jazeera satellite network.

The Egyptian newspaper al-Mesryoon reported Wednesday that the Israeli billionaire is currently engaged in negotiations with Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, over the partial purchase of the media outlet. The talks are said to be conducted through an Egyptian mediator.

The account comes amid reports that the largest and most controversial Arab news channel in the Middle East is grappling with a terrible financial crisis at present. Saban had previously made an offer to purchase al-Jazeera in 2004, but it was turned down.

The Israeli-American magnate has supposedly made an offer of $5 billion for the popular Arabic-language news channel, in an attempt to get a hold of it and to broadcast a pro-Israeli message so as to influence the Arab opinion in favor of Tel Aviv's hawkish regime.

Al-Jazeera spawned a media revolution in the Arab world after it was founded in 1996. The network is reliant on state financial largesse, estimated at over $70 million a year, but does not broadcast shows critical of the Qatari government. Al-Jazeera, however, does air programs leveling criticism at all other Arab governments.

Seban made his fortune by buying the rights to market the Japanese kids show, "The Power Rangers," in America. He is a prominent supporter of Israel and the right-wing Netanyahu government. In addition, the Egyptian-born Jewish businessman is well known for his under-the-table dealings.

UN OFFICIAL SEEKS TO DEFUSE TENSION AT HOLY SITE IN JERUSALEM

UN OFFICIAL SEEKS TO DEFUSE TENSION AT HOLY SITE IN JERUSALEM
New York, Oct 8 2009 2:10PM
A senior United Nations official today visited Jerusalem?s Harem Al Sharif/Temple Mount compound, a site holy to both Jews and Muslims, in a bid to defuse tensions, calling for an immediate end to all provocations following recent clashes in the city.

?We cannot allow a further outbreak of violence or let extremists set the agenda,? UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry said after the visit as a guest of Muslim religious authorities.

?This holy city is important to both Israelis and Palestinians, and to people of three great faiths. Incitement from any quarter regarding holy sites, as well as provocative actions in East Jerusalem, do not serve the sanctity of the city or the cause of peace, and must stop.?

Mr. Serry conveyed his assessment of the situation to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) negotiator Saeb Erekat and Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon.

He said that from his visit and contacts it was clear that the situation was not yet resolved although tensions had somewhat eased, with everyone assuring him of their desire to see calm restored. ?I trust that we will see immediate practical steps of de-escalation on the ground and messages of calm and responsibility in public statements,? he added.

He stressed that the way forward is for all parties to fulfil their commitments to the internationally endorsed Roadmap calling for two States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace, and to resume final status negotiations on all core issues, including the final status of Jerusalem.

?Only this offers a route to lasting peace for both peoples and this holy city,? he concluded.
